Fight Hunger seeks to become the focal point for a growing global effort to eliminate child hunger from the earth. The largest and most visible demonstration of support will be an annual worldwide demonstration called Walk the World. Once a year hundreds of thousands – and eventually millions -- of people all around the globe will participate in “Walk the World”. This global event takes place on the same day at the same time in all 24 time zones, calling for the end of child hunger.

This demonstration of support serves to achieve our primary objective of encouraging policy-makers to focus more of their resources and efforts on ending child hunger. Our objective is rooted in the first UN Millennium Development Goal -- namely, the halving of chronic hunger worldwide by 2015.

Fight Hunger is a new advocacy initiative undertaken by the United Nations World Food Programme in cooperation with its partners. To succeed in ending child hunger by 2015, a much broader and active Fight Hunger coalition will be needed. We therefore seek additional partnerships with NGOs, international and religious institutions, local authorities, celebrities, schools, youth organisations and business and community leaders, all united in the common cause.

More than anything else, Fight Hunger is powered by individuals. We all have the ability to make a difference in this world, and we encourage people from all walks of life to join us and take action. In addition to the annual event “Walk the World”, our activities include asking relevant foreign and finance ministers and G-8 leaders to take appropriate action, engaging the press and celebrities in educating the public about child hunger and effective remedies (particularly school feeding, basic health interventions, and maternal and child nutrition programs), and organising advocacy and fundraising events that encourage people in their own communities to get involved in the issue of child hunger.
